OUR HISTORY
Setekimmoi SACCO & CBO
Building Financial Opportunities Through Unity
Our Journey Began with a Vision
The story of Setekimmoi began with a vision to unite, empower and improve the livelihoods of communities across Moiben Constituency in Uasin Gishu County, Kenya.
The initiative was championed by Hon. Silas Tiren, the then Member of Parliament for Moiben Constituency, together with his wife Claire, who recognized the need to improve access to financial resources and create economic opportunities for local communities, particularly women and youth.
Settekimmoi is an acronym for the five wards in Moiben Constituency—SE- Sergoit, TE- Tembelio, KI-Kimumu, KI-Karuna/Meibeki, and MOI-Moiben—and the initiative sought to bring the people of Moiben together through collective savings, financial cooperation, and community development.
The Beginning: Embracing Table Banking
Setekimmoi was established to address the financial challenges experienced by community members who had limited access to affordable credit and other financial services.
The initiative adopted the table banking concept, encouraging members to pool their savings and access financial support through a community-driven approach.
During its early development, membership consisted of approximately 70% women and 30% men, reflecting the strong participation of women in community savings initiatives.
However, the founders recognized the importance of creating a more inclusive platform that would serve the wider community.
The Establishment of Setekimmoi CBO
To promote broader participation and ensure that no one was left behind, Hon. Cyrus Tiren and his wife supported the establishment of Setekimmoi Community-Based Organization (CBO) alongside the SACCO initiative.
The CBO was intended to complement the financial activities of the SACCO by supporting community empowerment, youth and women’s development, and access to resources and opportunities.
This approach created a foundation for both financial empowerment and wider community development.
The Growth of Setekimmoi SACCO
On 13 April 2016, Setekimmoi SACCO was established as part of the broader effort to promote financial inclusion, savings and economic empowerment.
The SACCO developed around the cooperative principles of unity, shared responsibility and mutual support, providing members with opportunities to save, access loans and improve their financial well-being.
Through collective participation, Setekimmoi SACCO has continued working towards becoming a trusted financial partner for its members and their families.
